The historic heart of Zanzibar City

Stone Town is the historic urban centre of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow lanes, carved doors, markets, waterfront and layered Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences make it an important cultural counterpoint to a beach stay elsewhere on the island.

Why spend time in Stone Town?

Many Zanzibar itineraries use Stone Town only as a transfer point, but even one or two nights can add context to the island. Walking through the old town reveals a compact urban landscape shaped by centuries of Indian Ocean trade. Museums, historic buildings, markets, food and the seafront can be combined into a guided or independent exploration depending on the traveller’s interests.

Combining Stone Town with the beach

Stone Town works naturally at the beginning or end of a Zanzibar stay. Travellers can spend time in the historic centre before transferring to a north, east or south-coast beach area. This reduces unnecessary backtracking and can also make airport or ferry timing easier.

Planning your stay

Choose accommodation based on whether you want to be inside the old lanes or near easier vehicle access. Heat, walking distances and the timing of cultural visits should be considered when planning the day. Cruize Wild Safaris can combine Stone Town with mainland safari, trekking and beach accommodation as one Tanzania itinerary.
